English Language Development is a course designed for students to practice English skills in the four language domains of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. The first part of class time will be used for classroom instruction, while the second part will be used to support language development in other classes.
Attendance
Attendance is mandatory and important to achieve the course’s objectives. Students are expected to be on time every day for class with their material on their desk at the beginning of class. If you are absent, check the class website, or ask a classmate for missing assignments. Students will have one day for every day absent to turn in work that was missed.
Textbooks and Materials
Students need a 1 ½ -2 inch binder with at least five dividers (handouts, writing, grammar, vocabulary, completed work ) paper, pens, pencils, sticky notes, flash drive, and note cards, native language/English dictionary. Students will be using the Edge textbook series along with supplemental passages.
Participation
Students are expected to participate each class period. This includes but is not limited to informal and formal discussions, group work, projects, Socratic Seminars, and question and answer sessions.
Homework
Students are expected to take out homework that is due at the beginning of class and start working on the day’s warm-up. Late homework will receive an 80% if completed correctly and turned in the next day, 70% if turned in two days late, and 50% if turned in three or more days late.
Assessments
Students will be formally and informally assessed during the semester through written assignments, projects, presentations, tests, quizzes, homework, and class participation. Students who score below a 79% can retest after completing remediation. Students will receive the higher grade for a maximum of 79%. Student must make arrangements with the teacher for a retake.
Grading
Formal assessments are worth 70% of the student’s quarter grade. This will include tests, major quizzes, projects, and presentations. Informal assessments are worth 30% of the student’s grade. This will include class work, assignments, homework, mini-quizzes, and informal presentations. A minimum of 9 informal grades and 4 formal grades is required per quarter.
Grading Scale 100-90 A 89-80 B 79-70 C 69-60 D 59-0 F
Behavior
Disruptive behavior will not be tolerated. Disruptive behavior refers to any type of action or comment that prevents instruction, prevents learning, or prevents the learning of others. ** Arriving late is considered disruptive behavior and three tardies will result in a lunch detention and a phone call to parents/guardians. If tardies continue, a referral to administration will be written.
Consequences of inappropriate behavior are as follow:
1. Warning
2. Lunch Detention
3. Lunch Detention and parent/guardian contact
4. After School Detention and parent/guardian contact
5. Referral to school administration
